A great look at the beginnings of Grant Morrison's wild run on Batman。 Maybe not the best stories of that run but generally the most memorable。 A great look at the beginnings of Grant Morrison's wild run on Batman。 Maybe not the best stories of that run but generally the most memorable。 。。。more

The first arc in this book was probably my favorite。 I was less interested in the ones that followed and got farther from Damian, as I had picked this up to learn more about him, but they were all pretty good。 The one on the island was also really enjoyable。 I will also say that the fight scene in the art exhibition is probably one of my favorite scenes in comics。 Seeing all of the art pieces in the back line up with the action in the scene was so clever and enjoyable。 I loved it。

Batman by MorrisonTHE BLACK GLOVECollecting Batman 667-669 and 672-675*spoilers*I give this collection an 8。5/10A much stronger effort, this book is divided into 2 arcs with an epilogue chapter。The first arc has the world class talents of JH Williams III bringing it to life。 The story is an instant classic that harkens back to stories of old。 A private island, no modes of transportation available, a group of men stuck on it with one killer among them。 It just oozes fun! While the arc does refer to things that happened in issues collected in the Black Casebook, you have enough flashbacks to fill the blanks without feeling like you’re missing out。The next arc tackles that third Batman imposter and introduces us to Doctor Hurt。 There’s a ton of world building happening here has Morrison adds cool stuff to Batman’s already rich past。 Mostly he’s working towards RIP from what I can remember but it great。 The art by Tony S Daniel is so much better that the shit he does now!The world building in this book really gives it a leg up over the previous volume。 It end with a good issue drawn by Ryan Benjamin where Jezebel Jet guesses his secret identity and the last panel here is one of Morrison’s funniest。 。。。more

Let's get one thing out of the way - for the amount I have seen people on youtube gush over Morrison's run on Batman I expected a lot more than this。 This was a solid Batman story。 There were some good parts and some muddled parts that made little sense or were too rushed。The part that I loved - and other people hated :) - was the story in the middle using the Batmen of the World, a kind of And Then There Were None but with Batmen from around the world trapped on an island。 The art by JH William Let's get one thing out of the way - for the amount I have seen people on youtube gush over Morrison's run on Batman I expected a lot more than this。 This was a solid Batman story。 There were some good parts and some muddled parts that made little sense or were too rushed。The part that I loved - and other people hated :) - was the story in the middle using the Batmen of the World, a kind of And Then There Were None but with Batmen from around the world trapped on an island。 The art by JH Williams was spectacular as always and I loved seeing these Batmen from the 60's。 The one thing Morrison DOES excel at is he makes Batman (in these stories) a detective。 That is the aspect so many writers forget about, they make him into a super human ninja and forget he is the World's greatest detective。 The other thing I like is how Morrison takes silly aspects from Batman's 50-60's run (which were a joke) but gives them a serious modern spin that works (e。g。 Batmen of the world)。Damien is introduced here as Batman's son。 Now Damien goes on to some wonderful stories but his introduction here felt rushed and the ending fizzled。 We also get Three Batmen posing as Batman - which after reading twice I still couldn't follow。 They were cops trained to be Batman? Whatever。 So - some good and bad。 Overall not the classic I was led to believe but still fun。 Morrison's creativity shines - I wish his story telling skills could catch up to his creativity。 。。。more

Grant Morrison enters the Batman universe with a bang! Takes some getting used to the new visual and storytelling styles but once you start to just let things happen and have some patience you get to a satisfying development。 I love how badass and annoying at the same time Damian Wayne is, but I'm not sure if and why I feel like the only one to do so。 The character has a huge potential, can't wait to see more of him!4 stars Grant Morrison enters the Batman universe with a bang! So interesting to see the upbringing of Damian Wayne from his father after Talia and I really enjoyed the dynamic between Bruce and Alfred! The middle was a little slow but I really liked this

This book is a strange mix of Batman stories, there was too much going on and it left me confused。 A lot of the stories didn’t go together, and the writing wasn’t good enough to tie the threads, if there were any, between stories。 I wasn’t a fan of this book; I remember reading some of these comics when they came out years ago and not being particularly impressed then。

4。5 stars。Grant Morrison is such a unique and necessary figure in the realm of comics。 I like to think that I’ve read a lot of Batman at this stage, but I’ve never read something like this。 Never thought it could be possible and it couldn’t be anywhere outside of a comic book。 GM is a legend and the start of this run reminds of why he’s such an important figure。 His work on new x-men, his mind bending stuff on invisibles and his super intricate and foggy stories he weaves on this batman run are 4。5 stars。Grant Morrison is such a unique and necessary figure in the realm of comics。 I like to think that I’ve read a lot of Batman at this stage, but I’ve never read something like this。 Never thought it could be possible and it couldn’t be anywhere outside of a comic book。 GM is a legend and the start of this run reminds of why he’s such an important figure。 His work on new x-men, his mind bending stuff on invisibles and his super intricate and foggy stories he weaves on this batman run are just irreplaceable。 He is one of the reasons why the comic medium is so appealing and so different to every other medium。 This story can’t be told in a movie or in a novel, it can only work how it is。 I would tell anyone and everyone to read one of the titles I just mentioned of his because they’re brilliant。 However, they are extremely complex and can be alienating if you aren’t prepared to give in and let GM do his hazy thing and give you the story in a really confusing way。 But I think that’s one of the reasons why the works are so good。 My only real disappointment in this trade came when i got to the issue that was basically just a mini novel。 I hated it, I thought the visuals sucked - they looked like someone messing around with a new graphic design tool for the first time, the story was decently crafted because it was written by Morrison but it still didn’t warrant being there。 It was a really disappointing issue I don’t read comics to read novels。。Keen to continue this run。 。。。more

The first and last story in this volume are great。 Thoroughly engaging story and great characterization work for Damian in particular。 Talia doing crazy Talia things in her somewhat endearing but mostly selfish hope to be a family, and baby boy murderer doing equal parts baby boy and murderous things to great comedic effect。 But then just as the story is getting good, "Batman & Son" ends and is never continued。 Very very very intrigued with what happens next and eager to read whatever story it o The first and last story in this volume are great。 Thoroughly engaging story and great characterization work for Damian in particular。 Talia doing crazy Talia things in her somewhat endearing but mostly selfish hope to be a family, and baby boy murderer doing equal parts baby boy and murderous things to great comedic effect。 But then just as the story is getting good, "Batman & Son" ends and is never continued。 Very very very intrigued with what happens next and eager to read whatever story it occurs in。 4/5 for this one。 Following this is a weird prose story about Joker that I skipped over, a weird future Damian story that kind of involves one of the characters from B&S, and then a 'we're all trapped in a house and someone is killing us off one by one' story with a bunch of people I couldn't care less about。 Skimmed right through this one as the additional characters were difficult to pay attention to or care about。 Was very very very expectant that the Talia and Damian story would continue soon and was eager to tear through the book to get to it。 2-2。5/5 for this story, but maybe if I gave it a real shot it could have been better。Finally the book ends with what actually ends up being a great story that I believe is setting up some sort of resolution in "Batman R。I。P。", which I've only just started。 Some of the geek squad from the murder mystery have also shown up in RIP and I now realize why I was forced to read about them, although I still don't know or care for them。 Final unnamed story gets a 3。8/5 from me。 Nice story with a cool Batman v Batman concept that finds Bruce doing awesome Bruce things。 Plotwise it might be better than B&S even, but the writing just doesn't hit on all fronts quite as well as B&S does。 Overall I give this collection a 3。5/5。 The meat of it is excellent and has really high highs but the meandering excess in the middle of the book really halts its momentum too harshly to remain compelling all the way through。 A really uneven read。 3。5 feels generous。 。。。more

Batman and Son is an intense novel written and drawn from several different authors all revolving around a storyline。 This gets confusing however as it is not always clear as to what is happening as well as sometimes whom is whom。 Ultimately the novel ends with a revelation that leaves the reader wanting more。

A- | Morrison starts building a great history for Batman, with his own pace and experimenting on different themes and narrative, that might not be for everyone taste, but if you insist on going with this through the next volumes it will be rewardable。Also, if you want to get all the references about other Batman versions or Bruce's allucinations you should read The Black Casebook。 A- | Morrison starts building a great history for Batman, with his own pace and experimenting on different themes and narrative, that might not be for everyone taste, but if you insist on going with this through the next volumes it will be rewardable。Also, if you want to get all the references about other Batman versions or Bruce's allucinations you should read The Black Casebook。 。。。more

Anyone? No? Because it makes no sense。 Ok, cool。The Damian story-line starts out with Bruce picking up other women (specifically Jezebel Jet) and Talia becoming jealous (maybe)。 I kind of both loved and hated that Alfred encourages Bruce to play ("re-learn how to be") Bruce Wayne a bit。 I loved it because it's very Alfred and Batman。 I hated it because Morrison is not a very good Bruce Wayne writer。 He writes Batman sure, but Bruce is a non-entity for him, so it's all very tongue in cheek when Bruce goes out to pretend to be Bruce Wayne, which makes me kind of sad。 Anyway, the Ninja/Man-Bat fight in the art exhibition was very eye-roll inducing for me。 The art was all Pop Art which spoke to the action on in the frame。 It was too on the nose and pretty lame。There's even one half-page panel of Batman dropping down to kick-land on a Man-Bat Ninja and his inner monologue/text box reads "If there's one thing I hate。。。 it's art with no content。"Really?! That's the one thing Batman hates??Anyway。I seriously don't understand why Talia leaves Damian with Batman。 Does she want Batman to:1。 "Train and raise this child of ours, but I also want to terrorize the world!" 2。 "Love me or I will terrorize the world!" 3。 Or, "Reject me, and I will still punish the world!"Either way, she's dumping Damian off for some reason that's very unclear。。。。Why would she drop off her son with a superhero? If Batman is only going to try and raise Damian for good (i。e。 not terrorizing) why would Talia leave him there? Doesn't she want to only terrorize the world (see her wants above)? How does her Ninja-Assassin raised son becoming a superhero fit into her terrorizing plan/idea? Ug。If ANYONE understands this, PLEASE let me know!! Anyway, I love Damian。 He also doesn't make sense as a character, but damn if he's not earnest and willing to try! Needy to please and be the best, I love him, except when he is a dick to Tim (and Alfred!), which is very sad。 But then we get to see Batman jumping in to love and nurture an injured Tim, so that's super sweet。After Damian, the volume jumps back to the 3 Batman plot-line (good) with a one-off issue #666 of future Batman Damian in Gotham。 It was dark and dreary and I kind of liked it! It introduced the last Batman in advance of the ending, and I like that as a storytelling device; I think it worked really well here。 The Black Glove story was fine if a weird departure from the rest of the volume。 It reminded me of something I'd forgotten from Batman R。I。P。, but it was fine。I hated the issue The Clown At Midnight which was mostly stiff prose with CREEPY computerized/game art accompanying it。 Why?? :(So, all in all this gets a 3。5 from me for the things I liked here & were done well。 。。。more

I had read this book as individual issues once upon a time, but the thing is, writer Grant Morrison's work works so much better when read in longer trades。 His writing in individual issues can feel disjointed, and sometimes what looks like a minor plot point in one issue will be brought up six issues later in conversation between characters in a way that I sometimes didn't always remember what they were talking about。 The benefit, then, is getting all those issues in one place, allowing me to se I had read this book as individual issues once upon a time, but the thing is, writer Grant Morrison's work works so much better when read in longer trades。 His writing in individual issues can feel disjointed, and sometimes what looks like a minor plot point in one issue will be brought up six issues later in conversation between characters in a way that I sometimes didn't always remember what they were talking about。 The benefit, then, is getting all those issues in one place, allowing me to see exactly what he was doing, and what he was doing here was setting up big stuff down the road in ways I didn't recognize at the time。 As a result, I really dug this book a lot more the second time than I did the first。 。。。more
